We're still a good two months before Spring Training '12 begins in the MLB. That won't stop me from taking a look at the New York Yankee team we currently have and say, "There is no way we can compete." The wound from that Game 5 loss to Detroit is still fresh. With that being said, I still believe the Yanks cannot compete, especially with offseason acquisitions made by the Anaheim Angels.
Let's say, for example, the Yankees made the playoffs and were set to square off against the Angels, like they have notoriously done so in the past. If you're a Yankee fan you know the track record is not that great. How could we forget being eliminated during both the 2002 and 2005 American League division series.
Pitching wise, I'd take C.C. Sabathia in Game 1 against Jerred Weaver. After that game though, it seems to me as if the Angels have the Yanks by the baseballs. Signing Albert Pujols didn't hurt them either. As we know Yankee first basemen Mark Teixiera isn't necessarily around come playoff time. Yankee second basemen Robinson Cano has the advantage over Howie Kendrick, and I'd take Derek Jeter over Erick Aybar at shortstop, but to say that this Yankee team is capable of winning a series against the Angels is blasphemous. I'd have to think I was in 2009 to say that.
Who knows what New York is planning before the start of the season. It would not surprise me if GM Brian Cashman is looking even further and plotting a trade. What would surprise me is if the Yankees did not meet the Angels come playoff time.
