When the Winter Meetings first began, Brian Cashman made it known that his priority as Yankees' GM was starting pitching. Now that the market for quality pitching is depleting, maybe he should take a look at Roy Oswalt. The Phillies' pitcher has some concerns, but it's something that the Yankees might be able to gamble on.
A month ago, Oswalt's agent was seeking a three year deal for the pitcher. Not many teams were willing to take this gamble because of Roy's back issues. Two years ago, he was diagnosed with two degenerative discs, and at 34 who can say when the back will go? Fast forwarding 30 days later, no team has shown interest in committing that much money and years to Oswalt. So, the pitcher has stated that it is possible that he'll take a one year deal. That is all Brian Cashman, and rumor has it the Cardinals as well, needed to hear before making the call.
At a one year deal, this a gamble the Yankees need to take. If Oswalt can remain healthy, a one year deal is a bargain for a pitcher of Oswalt's caliber. Imagine a rotation headlined by C.C. Sabathia, Roy Oswalt, and Ivan Nova? You take the pressure off of Nova being a number 2 starter, and pass the baton to someone that thrives under that pressure. Depending on the innings pitched and ERA, the Yankees could even offer Oswalt certain incentives to sweeten the deal.
