So the New York Knicks are looking to compete not only the Eastern Conference Championship, but also for the Larry O'Brien Trophy. The Larry O'Brien Trophy is awarded to the team that wins the NBA Finals, and Amar'e Stoudemire, Carmelo Anthony, and Tyson Chandler believes its next destination is New York. Tyson Chandler was a big reason in why the Dallas Mavericks won the trophy last year with his defensive prowess, but the Mavs had Chandler and depth to their bench. The Knicks have Chandler and that's where it stops.
If the Knicks are serious about competing now, they need to sign some more talent to their bench. What's the best option available you ask? Well, Kenyon Martin's contract was bought out by his Chinese team. Unfortunately, under the stipulation, Martin cannot sign with any team until his Chinese team's season is over, which is sometime in March. According to the New York Post, Carmelo Anthony wants Kenyon Martin to dawn the blue and orange uniform for the Knicks. The forward has been known for his defensive toughness and physical play and New York could most definitely use that type of player when Amar'e needs a rest; not to mention pairing him with Tyson Chandler, another tough and physical player.
Kenyon Martin is not the only available option. Another player that signed a Chinese contract during the lockout was Wilson Chandler. Similarly to Martin, Chandler cannot sign a contract until the end of the Chinese playoffs in March. Every New York fan loves the option of Wilson Chandler coming back home. We all remember how he started to heat up last season before being traded to Denver during the Melo Drama. Unfortunately for the Knicks, Chandler is a restricted free agent, and the Nuggets can match any offer made to him. This is a big blow to the Knicks as they can only offer their $2.5 million dollar exception, and it is almost certain that Denver would choose to match that.
Having either of these two on the Knicks bench almost guarantees a further advancement into the playoffs than without them. I guess we just have to wait till March to see if the Knicks have one of these guys sign on the dotted line.
