The New York Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner met with Scott Boras this morning. Many people assumed that this was to discuss a potential contract agreement for starting pitcher Edwin Jackson, who is looking for a new home. That's not the topic of discussion right now. Why would the Yankees be looking to add a starting pitcher that would currently fit into the number five spot in their rotation? Rumors are circulating from many reputable sources that the meeting was not only the client with a pitching arm, but also one of the clients with a powerful bat. If you said Prince Fielder, you are absolutely correct.
As you may know, after Albert Pujols signed with Miami, Fielder was the next most sought after player. Weeks later, he is still an unsigned free agent. The Yankee discussion could be pure rumor, or it could have some truth to it. Keep in mind, the Yankees are a team that is built to compete yearly for a championship. They are not in a rebuilding stage where pieces have to come and go. Agent Scott Boras could be using the Yankees to drive up the price of Fielder to other ball clubs interested, such as the Nationals or Cubs. He could also truly be looking to put Prince in pinstripes. For that to happen, the Yankees would have to move fan favorite Mark Teixeira and his hefty contract.
It is going to be interesting to see how this pans out for both the Yankees and Prince Fielder. I do know one thing though: rumors are going to be flying around until spring training.
